Leave it to New Orleans to provide a supercool (literally) tradition like White Linen Night! When there was no air conditioning way back when, merchants got together and held a block party around dusk to night to encourage people to come out, sample wares, shop, eat, drink, and socialize. Why white linen? It’s light, airy, and doesn’t absorb the sun like darker colors do, helping people keep cool as they hung out. Today, the tradition (which takes place in NOLA’s Warehouse Arts District) continues the first week of August each year and with more of an emphasis on the arts. Houston’s Heights area even has their own version that plays perfectly into the historical and walkable area’s charm.

Do you have to wear white linen, though? White, probably. Linen, no. You don’t want to be left out! And it’s fun to see the sea of white as you stroll the streets with friends. Here are some outfit examples and tips to make your White Linen Night experience fun and comfortable.

Tips:

- Wear flats or comfortable wedges / platforms. You will be doing a lot of walking, so also make sure your shoes won’t nip your feet after a few hours.

- Don’t limit yourself to wearing just a white dress – although it IS a great excuse to! Get creative and find all-white looks you may not have thought of before.

- Many people see this event as an excuse to dress up just a bit…what we called polished but relaxed. Try a white capri and cropped jacket, white shorts and a cute knit top.

- Accessorize with some punches of color! A colorful belt, fun jewelry or different shoes will help break up your all-white look.

- Keep cool…Bring a fan – hand-held electric (I’m serious!) or a cute manual one – and drink plenty of water, especially if you plan to do some drinking. You will be surrounded by body heat galore in addition to the hot and humid weather.

After what seems like an eternity of slaving over tests, papers and then finals, graduation can seem like a relief to most. But the stress is not over—the question still remains. What to wear?

East Coast

Schools on the East coast are notorious for their competitive academics. Like the concentration of smarts, these schools are also notorious fashion hubs. Students look as good as their GPA’s. And just because they’ve just finished a round of finals does not mean that its time to relax. Au contraire, these scholars take their graduation style seriously and so should the attendees.

Whether the commencement ceremony is indoors or outdoors, the perfect dress is key. When shopping, think “polished.” You’re not trying to make a Lady Gaga-esque statement. You want to look good. A solid, or subtle-print strapless dress is perfect for under a gown or in the audience. It is cool enough to wear under the sun and can be paired with a light sweater or wrap for an indoor procession. If you would rather pair the pieces of your outfit, try a cropped blazer and fitted skirt.

The South. Michelle Obama. Photo credit: Firenze Jewels

The South

This unique style Mecca has laid claim to the charming sundress and necessary neckpiece: pearls. These graduations are typically not as formal as schools on the East, and many have their ceremonies outdoors. Graduates and attendees alike: pay attention to the weather! Nothing is more miserable than roasting under a gown and ruining an otherwise stunning outfit. Try light fabrics with few layers to ensure that you stay comfortable and fabulous during these sometime lengthy ceremonies. Avoid layering.

In continuing with southern style, don’t be afraid to try a hat. A colored, straw hat or a straw-colored hat with a band or light scarf is instantly elegant and classy. Just be sure that 1. you can still see the stage 2. It does not hit your neighbor and 3. If you have to take it off, your hair is hat proof.

West Coast. Anne Hathaway. Photo credit: FabSugar.com

West Coast

When “Cali Style” meets commencement ceremony, graduates and attendees alike have the luxury of dressing up or down for the occasion. A sundress, wrap dress, or tunic are all appropriate. To prepare for cooler temperatures and wind-chill, pair with a sweater or scarf. For an edgy look, pair a fitted blazer with cropped shorts.

Absolutely Necessary Accessory: Sunglasses

Wherever the graduation, you will be outside at one point in time. Sunglasses make any day-look instantly stylish, and if you are blessed with watching or graduating in sunny weather, great shades are key. Find a pair that do not overwhelm your face and compliment your cheeks and nose. If you find your current pairs are a loose, gently bend the ends of the arms (pieces that rest on your ears) inward. This tightens their grip on your head, and they wont slip or slide.

Last week was the Kentucky Derby, and if you missed the opportunity to break out your hats and mint juleps or whiskey sours, you’ve got another chance to get into the horse-racing spirit with the Preakness, on Saturday, May 15.

Known as the second race of the Triple Crown (which starts with the Kentucky Derby and ends with the Belmont), the Preakness is held in Maryland every year, and despite some bankruptcy issues, the race isn’t about to move just yet. Like other Triple Crown races, it’s exclusively for thoroughbreds, and actually only 3-year-old horses get to compete in the Preakness.

Horse-racing culture is one of the few sporting events in the U.S. that still upholds the glamour and class of the decades before jean shorts and tank tops were all a girl needed to cheer on her favorite team.

And despite the mud, gambling and horse poop, there’s cleanly cut grass, old fashioned cocktails, a rainbow of outfits in the crowd, and of course, those hats. For a day at least (or three days if you celebrate each race), you get to pretend you’re some sort of effervescent hybrid between Serena Van der Woodsen and Betty Draper. Here are our tips for partying like the Triple Crown crowd.

Hats aren’t just for the Kentucky Derby. If you’re going to a party, even if it’s inside, bring your fedora or a wider-brimmed hat that you can easily adorn with extra ribbon, lace, or feathers. The more festive, the better. Polly Singer Hats and Veils lists great tips for picking out the right hat on her website.

Get preppy. Horse races bring out the true Preppy McPrepptersons, kind of like the southern version of polo matches. Pick out a dress or skirt and blouse combo that you’d normally save for a wedding or business lunch. When else do you have an excuse to get dressed up for a Saturday house party?

Don’t forget the accessories. Would Betty Draper leave the house without her gloves, pocketbook or lipstick? Neither should you.

You’ve been waiting all winter for that tropical beach vacation, and it’s finally here! Make the trip a little easier with these tips and ideas for packing and traveling in style. The main things to consider for your travel wardrobe are your destination’s particular customs, your activities, and how long you will be there. Many Central American locales, for example, are considered dangerous outside of the resort or hotel property, so if you should venture out on your own (or even with a trusted local), you should err on the conservative and cover yourself with a light shawl, long-sleeve shirt or t-shirt.

Hot, beachy weather, no matter where you are, calls for a little more punch in your wardrobe. Bright colors and bold jewelry are acceptable anywhere, anytime.

The Weather

Humidity can be overwhelming for many people who are used to cooler, drier climates, especially when the moisture carries into the night air. But it offers a certain advantage – no matter where you go and what you do, you will always be sticky, sweaty or both, so comfort trumps worries about style, leaving you with many as many or as few options as you choose. One of the easiest tips to keep cool is to keep fabrics light and airy – light cotton, rayon, jersey knit, and linen are all good options to keep you cool in hot climates.

If you are lucky enough to hike or zipline through mountains, don’t forget a light rain jacket or long-sleeve shirt and, preferably, light capris to cover your legs as you walk through jungle areas. Temperatures can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler and much drier in those areas, making it even more of a change from the warm, humid temperatures by the shore.

Some good advice because of the hot weather: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It’s always a good idea for your skin and muscles, but there’s nothing worse than getting heatstroke that lasts for two days and missing part of your vacation (been there, done that, hated it!). The general rule when you’re out and about in the heat and especially when consuming alcohol is one glass of water for every two drinks.

What to Wear

Packing for a tropical destination might seem as daunting a task as any other vacation, but you have more room to play with your wardrobe (literally and in your suitcase!).

For a ten-day trip, you can be comfortable with two pairs of walking shorts, a pair of board shorts, a pair of lighter casual pants in cotton or linen, a few knit tees or woven tops in bright colors, a couple of basic-colored tanks (great layered under a long-sleeve shirt), a pair of capris for traveling to colder climates, three swimsuits, a long-sleeve shirt, sarong, two casual dresses, and one nicer dress that can be worn for a more special occasion.

On your feet: Haivianas for the beach, pool, and (in some cases) the shower (I know, YUCK!); a pair of neutral wedge sandals to go with black or brown-based outfits for fun, non-walking day trips and at night; light summer flats; and a pair of thong sandals that can be worn anywhere in brown, tan, or white leather.

Versatility, as with most vacations, makes your trip wardrobe easier to manage and less of a headache though not as key for a trip to a warmer country since each piece you pack won’t take up as much space AND you won’t care as much when you are sticky and sweaty most of the day anyway. A sarong, for example, doubles as a cover-up at night or when traveling in the city or as a cover-up for the beach and pool. A long-sleeve shirt can be your travel top, a “jacket” in the mountains, or a cover-up for the beach and pool. A light jersey halter dress can be worn both during the day with casual sandals or at night with wedges.

In general, you will likely be by the pool or beach most of the day, so you can re-wear two or three cover-ups over the course of your trip. For the sake of pictures, a good tip is to wear an outfit at night then wear it on an excursion or during the day when your are likely to sweat so you don’t waste an outfit by sweating in it the first time it makes its appearance.

Just because you can shred it as well as (if not better than!) the boys can doesn’t mean you have to dress like ‘em! Ski season is just beginning for a number of spring breakers and deal seekers but still in time to take advantage of the sweet fashions on the slopes and sales galore. But every stylin’ snow bunny knows that you won’t look good unless you feel good, either. Here is what the experts had to say about meshing fashion and function for a productive, fun, and fashionable trip.

Jared Shope – President of CD Ski and Sports

FABRIC | The latest in fabrics for ski wear is “soft shell” – nearly every designer is using this. Gone are the bulky, ridged fabrics. Soft shell provides a four-way stretch, making it comfortable and warm. (Jared can share details on what each designer/manufacturer calls this fabric in their lines.)

COLOR | Hot on the slopes this year is a bit of ’80s re-done – bright colors are back, like brilliant orange and lime green. Color blocking is also in, but done in a more subtle way than it was in the ’80s.

ACCESSORIES | Accessories are falling in line with colors, mimicking some of the styles of 1980s with bright colors.

LAST WORDS | If you want to get a jump on fashionistas, next year’s hot color will be purple.

Caitlin Gambee –

ACCESSORIES | (???) Every snow bunny should definitely have cute accessories so even when they fall they will look good!

APRES SKI | I also stress the importance of Apres Ski items such as good stylish boots that can easily transition from the harsh elements to looking good all day long as well as nice baselayers that can also be part of your aprs ski outfit.

Khombu www.khombu.com – Apres Ski boots to keep transition your day skiing look to night time fun look!

FUNCTION TRENDS | Heat Trap, Eco Fabrics

Gordini www.gordini.com – baselayers, gloves, faceprotection – trendy snowboarder and ski styles. Also using new heat trap technology!

Kombi www.kombisports.com – baselayers, gloves, and hats – they are using advanced eco fabrics which are really advanced at keeping you dry and warm. Cute styles designed by professional skiers and snowboarders.

STYLE TRENDS | Be bold and be scene. Bright colors and Eye catching designs!

LAST WORDS | Don’t make yourself choose between style or comfort – Pain is beauty? No way!

Shredding Betty

STYLE TRENDS | A better-looking profile. Dontcha just hate those helmets that make you look like a Goomba in those Mario games? New styles feature a shape that give you a more ergonomic profile by fitting around your head as opposed to on it. (Bern Muse Helmet – http://shop.shreddingbetty.com/bern-muse-helmet—matte-grey-p45.aspx)

ONLINE RESOURCES

Aspen Fashion Week | Hit the slopes, shop the latest, and get a head start on the next big thing in ski resort fashion in Aspen March 14 to 19. Celebrities like Heidi Klum, , pro skier Nick DeVore, and Olympic gold medal winner Lasse Kjus will kick off the annual event with on-mountain activities that will help show off their lines of ski and snowboard apparel. Apres ski (that’s after skiing, for all you newbie’s!) fashion shows and presentations will feature designs from Marmot, Kjus, Victorinox, and more. AFW has partnered with FEED as the official charitable partner.

Mardi Gras this year falls on Tuesday, February 16, which means you’ve got to fast forward through your Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day outfits and start planning for one of the biggest party days of the season.

Below we’ll give tips for two types of Mardi Gras outfits: one for parades (we’re focusing on New Orleans, Mobile and other U.S. parades) and one that works for house parties. If you’ve been to Carnival celebrations in Europe or South America, please leave your tips on what to wear to those parades in the comments section below!

What to wear to a Mardi Gras parade

New Orleans is a fashionable but casual town that normally eschews high heels and tight clothing for boots, sandals, jeweled flats and super-soft tees. Women in NOLA love accessorizing, but if you’re going to a parade, you won’t have to worry about bringing your own jewelry to the party — you’ll be showered in enough beads, novelty items, flowers, and plastic rings to make you look like a queen.

The important thing to remember when dressing for a Mardi Gras parade is comfort and practicality. Here are our best tips:

Wear flat, closed-toe shoes. People are going to be stomping and jumping all over your poor feet, so wear your Converse, TOMS or flat boots to protect yourself. You’re also going to be standing and walking around for hours — and we do mean hours — so wear socks or liners to prevent blisters. Pack band-aids just in case.

Don’t wear short skirts. You’re just asking to get groped, especially if you slip or reach too high for beads. Layer leggings underneath short shorts and skirts to be safe and comfy.

Wear washable items. It’s a safe bet that whatever you wear on Mardi Gras is going to get dirty. At some point during the day or night, at least one of the following is going to spill on you: beer, mud, frosting, jello shots, daiquiris, and funnel cake or beignets. It’s okay to wear a fitted t-shirt and your Saturday morning jeans — you’re going to be covered in brightly colored beads anyway!

Bring a windbreaker with pockets. It often rains or at least drizzles in New Orleans, and if you want extra protection from sloshing beer, stuff a windbreaker into your bag.

Choose a crossbody, zip-top bag. For security’s sake and to keep your hands free, wear a crossbody zip-top bag that has room for all your stuff, but make sure you leave valuables locked up at home.

Bring plastic sunglasses. Opt for cheap plastic sunglasses to protect your face from flying beads rather than a baseball cap, which can limit your vision in a bad way.

Don’t be afraid to get a little crazy. Mardi Gras brings out everyone’s kooky side, so if you’ve been dying to wear those turquoise knee socks, paint your face and wear glittery fake eyelashes, this is the day to mix and match your crazy accessories. Just make sure everything you put on is comfortable enough to leave on all day.

What to wear to a Mardi Gras party:

Because we’re not all lucky enough to live in a place where Mardi Gras is an official state holiday, or where you can even find a Mardi Gras parade, you might have to settle for a house party. Here’s how to get into the spirit:

Go for gold, green and purple: It’s tacky, but it’s also the tricolor tradition for Mardi Gras. You can always wear green or purple and accessorize with gold jewelry or metallic shoes.

Embrace impractical accessories: Since you’re going to be inside, or at least near chairs, you can wear your high-heeled boots or ridiculous hat, and then take them off whenever you get uncomfortable.

Consider the invitation: Some Mardi Gras parties are actually black-tie, or at least cocktail attire. Make sure you know the dress code before you go.

Act like it’s New Year’s: For dressier parties, apply the New Year’s rule: start with a cocktail or black-tie basic (like an LBD) and then add blingy accessories and fun shoes to make it fun.

Just click on My Stylist and type in your location, date, and an occasion and let My Stylist do the rest. Join us on Facebook and Twitter for everything fashion and travel from WeareverTheWeather.com!

If you’re an editor, writer, photographer, blogger, or just hanger-on (no shame), how are you going to decide what to wear to the most fashionable events in the world?

Refinery 29 editorial intern Beverly Fong

Believe it or not, you’ll want to dress sort of like you do every day, except a bit more nicely. Unless you have a hired car, seat assignments and your own mini-portfolio on Style.com, Jak & Jil or The Sartorialist, you’ll kill yourself either by tripping in your high, pointy heels or freezing to death in your sequined cocktail dresses. Here we’re outlining a few tried and true guidelines that have worked for us in Copenhagen and New York, and then listing other Fashion Week dressing guides elsewhere on the web. Cheers!

Our Tips:

Wear well-fitting, neutral-based clothes. You don’t have to wear all black, but pack a neutral-based collection of items that fit like a second skin. This will keep you from looking droopy and like your clothes are just hanging off of you after wearing them all day, for a couple of days. Think: your perfect skinny jeans or a fitted sheath dress with bright, textured belts.

Dress warm. Tommy Ton’s caught editors in Paris in carelessly donned fur coats — a perfect way to dress up your jeans or shorts-and-tights look while staying warm.

Wear flat shoes. If you wear heels, even small ones, you will be miserable at the end of the day. Don’t you want to stay up for the parties? Try motorcycle boots or flat OTK boots that go with dresses and jeans.

Bring a big bag. You’re going to need something roomy to stash invites, freebies, water, snacks, press kits and business cards.

Dress like yourself. Fashion Week is kind of like the industry’s biggest branding moment, so dressing up like Leigh Lezark is only going to make you look like a wannabe. Dress according to your personal style, with one or two extra pops, like a bright scarf or studded top during the day: you’ll be more comfortable, confident and eye-catching.

It’s time to break out the cozy sweaters and cords! Nothing says fall better than a crisp drive through the country’s best display of autumn splendor – New England.

If you are lucky enough to make it to this region of the US in September and October, you can take any one of dozens of recommended fall foliage tours in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont that can range anywhere between 30 to 200+ miles.Warm, moist air from the south and cold, dry air to the north make the weather there a little unpredictable this time of year, so layers are ideal instead of packing hard cold-weather items like a parka or long johns. Style-wise, while trends are appreciated here as in any other part of the country, New Englanders seem to always maintain that sense of classic simplicity with a twist of individuality here and there, so that special key fall piece like your furry vest, tailored hat, or funky scarf are a go.

Color choices tend to be richer and deeper. Neutrals like mushroom gray, tan, beige, and black are also great options layered together or with brighter colors.

Make sure you have layers that can withstand any extreme changes as you peel each one off. Simply wearing a thin layer, like a tank or tee, under a super-thick jacket might not get you through a rise or drop in temperature between 45 and 80 degrees (yes, this can actually happen!).

________Vermont foliage.

Instead, opt for a three-layer plan: A thin layer of a slim tee, tank, or dress; a second layer of a light cardigan, knit vest, fleece, hoodie, or light knit sweater; then a water-repellant jacket, leather jacket, or cropped trench to pull it all together. Leggings, a skirt or fall shorts with tights in a fabulous color, jeans, or other casual pairs of pants like velveteen or corduroy have you covered on the bottom. Don’t forget your knit cap, tailored hat, or thin knit scarf for cooler days or nights.

Hopefully you will be doing some walking to truly enjoy the foliage and fresh air. Street-ready sneakers, low-heeled or flat boots (LOVE the plethora of slouchy suede styles out there!), or a comfortable pair of flats will let you cover miles (or, ok, YARDS) of enjoyment.

And after a long day of driving through the autumn wonderland, why not relax in your cozy room at a quaint bed and breakfast? SO New England!

Although October tends to be generally clear, our rule is: You just never know! And this year’s Farmer’s Almanac seems to predict an unusually rainy forecast in October. Prepare for a random rainstorm with a water-repellant jacket (places like REI and LL Bean carry investment pieces in more tailored-looking styles), a classic rain slicker, or a great trench, which can all act as your top layer. And, if you planned it just right, wellingtons to suit your style will complete your fall rain look.

Remember that the more inland or west you go, the cooler the temps will be while the coast tends to be warmer due to the heating of the Gulf stream just offshore (the Atlantic tends to be warmer than the Pacific because of this). Check out My Stylist for weather conditions and to help you plan your wardrobe!

New Braunfels, TX; October 30-November 8, 2009

October Average Temperatures: 82 degrees F High, 55 degrees Low

November Average Temperatures: 71 degrees F High, 46 degrees Low

Wurstfest, which takes place in New Braunfels, TX, (between Austin and San Antonio) is an annual folk celebration for the German community in South Texas. Each year, visitors from San Antonio, Austin, Houston and beyond flock to New Braunfels for beer, sausage, musical entertainment and general revelry. If you’re headed to New Braunfels for Wurstfest, you’ll need to take into consideration things like weather (it’s unfortunately unseasonably warm there even into early November) and local style, as well as how much messy eating and beer drinking you plan to do.

The festival is open rain or shine, which gives you some hint of the hard partying spirit of the locals and visitors alike and should warn you to pack some wellies and an umbrella just in case. More tips:

• You’ll see “beer wench” costumes and dirndls everywhere, but like we suggested for other fall festivals and Oktoberfests, you can still get into the spirit if you don’t have a costume. Stick a feather in your fedora or wear a pair of tweed shorts with your t-shirt for a low maintenance, boho tribute.
• Texans are usually pretty casual dressers, especially at outdoor festivals. Be prepared to see lots of college students and younger people who come for the awesome pitchers of beer and show up in t-shirts, flip flops, jeans and shorts.
• Pack a pair of boots to keep your feet dry if rain is in the forecast, or if it’s rained in the past week or 10 days. You can slip on wellies under shorts, jean skirts or over jeans if it’s cool enough, or wear Minnetonkas to stay comfy while you walk around the festival.
• Pack a jacket. New Braunfels’ weather at this time of the year can be almost anything. Pack a light jacket for the evening even if it’s supposed to be warmer during the day.

For three days in October, music lovers congregate to Austin, Texas, for one of the last, and best, music festivals of the year. No where else in the Lone Star State can lovers of rock, indie, blues, contemporary ethnic, reggae, eclectic, fusion, electronic, soul, and folk music (whew!) enjoy their favorite musical acts in the great outdoors. With highs in the nineties each year on average and clear sunny skies, the festival calls for nothing but comfort, comfort, comfort, for style as well as physical well-being.

“Festivals like ACL are about having fun and being yourself,” comments Houston department store buyer Stephanie who makes the two-and-a-half hour drive to the festival every year. “Don’t try to be trendy or ‘fit in’ because there are as many styles represented as there are people in attendance.”

Known for “keeping it weird,” no one will fault you for feeling free to express yourself in this town and especially at this festival.

This is the perfect time to pair those dusty cowboy boots with your denim cutoffs or mini. And just because it’s after Labor Day’s doesn’t mean you can’t don your favorite white sundress with that straw cowboy hat you couldn’t bear to put away at the end of the summer. Stephanie even suggests simply pairing your favorite tank and shorts over a swimsuit. Truly anything goes!

Though concert officials are doing their best each year to prevent previous years’ issues with dust, when you’re walking all day in the hot sun, expect to get a little grimy. It’s a good idea to bring a bandanna to wipe away dirt and sweat, to dip in water and keep you cool, or to dry off your hands when necessary. Keep it chic by tying it in your hair to start or all day around your wrist. Though it hasn’t rained in what seems like forever at ACL, if it does, don’t bother with your hair and break out your wellies. Simply pairing them with leggings and a tee with a proper hooded rain jacket will keep you dry and from missing out on your favorite bands.

“Most of all you have to wear a good attitude!” says Stephanie. “Festivals are about having fun, listening to music, enjoying your friends, and making new ones.”
