Leave it to New Orleans to provide a supercool (literally) tradition like White Linen Night! When there was no air conditioning way back when, merchants got together and held a block party around dusk to night to encourage people to come out, sample wares, shop, eat, drink, and socialize. Why white linen? It’s light, airy, and doesn’t absorb the sun like darker colors do, helping people keep cool as they hung out. Today, the tradition (which takes place in NOLA’s Warehouse Arts District) continues the first week of August each year and with more of an emphasis on the arts.
