Honolulu is an ideal getaway anytime of year.  Besides the fabulous blue waters, the insane beaches, friendly locals, and no shortage of fun things to do, style in Honolulu is just as easy and breezy as island life is.  Everywhere you go, on the streets, in the bars, or on the beach, you will find an expression of casual that runs the gamut thanks to an island culture of “take it easy” and an interesting parade of stylish visitors from all over the world.

Vacationers from all over the world visit Honolulu bringing with them their own local flavor and personal style.   Current trends you’d find back home all have their own island adaptations.  You can also find a plethora of tourist garb like Hawaiian shirts and dresses, leis, and plumeria hair accessories that look just right any time of day.  In other words, you can be as decked out, as simple, or as touristy as you feel comfortable.

Since the weather is wonderfully temperate, especially in the shade and with lots of breezes, you can comfortably wear light layers, accessories such as scarves and booties, lots of jewelry, and pants.  Don’t feel like you have to relegate your packing list to just sundresses, bathing suits and cover-ups (although you ARE on an island vacation – so feel free to relax your wardrobe, too!).

Other tips

• A fashionable wide-brimmed hat is fabulous on the beach or on the streets.
• A crossbody bag is easier on your back for a long day of shopping, walking, and touring.
• Show respect for restaurateurs and their guests by covering up indoors.  It’s a good idea to bring an extra top or cover-up in case the one you come to the beach with gets soaked (it happens!).
• A stroll on Kuhio or Kalakaua Avenues is a lot more enjoyable in a comfortable pair of sandals, flats, or cute street sneakers.
• If you plan to be a little more adventurous, be sure to bring sturdy sneakers for a hike up Diamond Head.
• Bring some light water shoes for the beach- Waikiki has some rocky areas in even the shallowest parts of its waters.
• Stylish layers are perfect for a sightseeing tour or a day of shopping.  Try the vest as an alternate cover up.

The perfect time of year since this is Honolulu’s dry season.  Unlike the US West Coast, surfers and bathers play and swim freely in the ocean since water temps are in the 80s!  Humidity, temperature and rainfall are moderated by it’s mid-Pacific location so expect good hair and a welcome sprinkling of rain here and there.  Winds from the mountains can bring some wind, so prepare for cool breezes on the beach on some days.

Rainfall is more common but only averages 2.5 inches monthly in October and November.

November and December are the rainiest months, averaging almost 4 inches per month.  Rainfall slowly decreases to 2 inches then 1 inch in each of April and May.  Water temps only go down 5 inches, making Honolulu a great winter getaway during the holidays!

After what seems like an eternity of slaving over tests, papers and then finals, graduation can seem like a relief to most. But the stress is not over—the question still remains. What to wear?

East Coast

Schools on the East coast are notorious for their competitive academics. Like the concentration of smarts, these schools are also notorious fashion hubs. Students look as good as their GPA’s. And just because they’ve just finished a round of finals does not mean that its time to relax. Au contraire, these scholars take their graduation style seriously and so should the attendees.

Whether the commencement ceremony is indoors or outdoors, the perfect dress is key.  When shopping, think “polished.” You’re not trying to make a Lady Gaga-esque statement. You want to look good. A solid, or subtle-print strapless dress is perfect for under a gown or in the audience. It is cool enough to wear under the sun and can be paired with a light sweater or wrap for an indoor procession. If you would rather pair the pieces of your outfit, try a cropped blazer and fitted skirt.

The South

This unique style Mecca has laid claim to the charming sundress and necessary neckpiece: pearls. These graduations are typically not as formal as schools on the East, and many have their ceremonies outdoors. Graduates and attendees alike: pay attention to the weather! Nothing is more miserable than roasting under a gown and ruining an otherwise stunning outfit. Try light fabrics with few layers to ensure that you stay comfortable and fabulous during these sometime lengthy ceremonies.  Avoid layering.

In continuing with southern style, don’t be afraid to try a hat. A colored, straw hat or a straw-colored hat with a band or light scarf is instantly elegant and classy. Just be sure that 1. you can still see the stage 2. It does not hit your neighbor and 3. If you have to take it off, your hair is hat proof.

West Coast

When “Cali Style” meets commencement ceremony, graduates and attendees alike have the luxury of dressing up or down for the occasion. A sundress, wrap dress, or tunic are all appropriate.  To prepare for cooler temperatures and wind-chill, pair with a sweater or scarf. For an edgy look, pair a fitted blazer with cropped shorts.

Absolutely Necessary Accessory: Sunglasses

Wherever the graduation, you will be outside at one point in time. Sunglasses make any day-look instantly stylish, and if you are blessed with watching or graduating in sunny weather, great shades are key. Find a pair that do not overwhelm your face and compliment your cheeks and nose. If you find your current pairs are a loose, gently bend the ends of the arms (pieces that rest on your ears) inward. This tightens their grip on your head, and they wont slip or slide.

San Francisco might likely conjure up images of the Golden Gate Bridge, summer fogs, and Chinatown.  But to understand San Francisco style is to look no further than its people.  Eclectic and selectively trendy at the same time, what you wear in San Francisco depends on comfort and individual tastes.“San Francisco style is influenced by the talented local artists that make trends happen in SF,” notes Carrie Steinberg from Goodjoe, a California-based line of tees that donates a dollar from every purchase to a nonprofit of your choice.  Home to the largest art and film school in the country, the Academy of Art University in downtown San Francisco, it’s no wonder that there’s a totally artsy, individualistic bent to how people dress.

“With the art, fashion and film school students and H&M, vintage and consignment stores, [people in San Francisco] are into recycling and being different, not following the so-called trends,” says image consultant Diane Parente.

“Rugged and simple casual wear is popular,” adds JT and Dyanna from the local street fashion blog TheSFStyle.com, “since many young adults in SF like to party and don’t have large incomes.  Rolling from park to bar to house party can be wild, and you need simple, affordable yet hip clothes to wear for that.”

Weather in San Francisco

“We have colder weather year-round,” explains JT and Dyanna. “Not extremely cold but consistently cold.  Maybe only a month or two of warmer weather at most.”

San Francisco’s hilly terrain (there are over 50 hills!) lends itself to fluctuating temperatures.  Wind is a major issue, especially during the fall and winter months.

“Because the wind can be pretty brutal, we avoid wearing large hats or anything that’s not well ‘anchored’ to our heads,” says Kate Walters of the firm LaForce + Stevens.

“The weather of San Francisco us as unpredictable [as] the people,” observes Parente.  “SF requires dressing in layers when you leave the house in the morning.  I call SF a jacket city.  One day it could be as warm as toast, and the next day you feel like snow is about to drop.”

San Francisco has a typical Mediterranean climate characterized by cold wet winters and warmer but mild dry summers.  From November to April, temperatures can range from 46–51 °F (8–11 °C) in the morning all the way to  degrees during the day 56–64 °F (13–18 °C).  Don’t expect snow, but bring your galoshes!  On average, there about 10 days of rain monthly from January to March.

What to Wear in San Francisco

Because of the varying weather throughout the day and across the city, San Francisco this time of year calls for, hands down, layering.  Leggings and tights are a must with skirts, dresses, and shorts as are second layers of cardigans, lighter jackets and sweaters, or vests.  Mixing textures will not only shield you from the low, wet temperatures but will also give you a more visually interesting ensemble.  Try tweed shorts, ribbed tights, a leather jacket, turtleneck, floral blouse (something that you would normally wear in the spring or summer), and some walking-friendly ankle boots or wedge heels.

Because of the bleeker weather, darker colors are always popular, according to JT and Dyanna.  A navy or black coat is a staple that will take you from touring to dinner and will be a necessity year-round.  And don’t forget the ubiquitous scarf in a great pattern or color that will stylishly peek out from under your simpler outerwear.

Businesswomen and society women go for timeless classics with an edge.  Go for a classic well fitted suit with a unique collar or lapel and some texture like tweed or a cool, subtle multi-colored weave.  Mix and match tops and bottoms for a little more visual interest.  Wear with a fun blouse with a brighter pattern or a shirt with pleats or a edgier silhouette.

Don’t be afraid to express yourself in this city.  The only way you could stand out is if you aren’t dressed appropriately for the weather!

Phoenix is the place to be come winter when temperatures everywhere else in the country dip down into the teens or single digits.  Besides its obvious natural beauty and health-conscious lifestyle, it is fast-growing into one of the best singles markets in the US and maintains a young, up-and-coming vibe across the city.  Both the weather and the youthful outlook play huge roles in what is worn in the Valley of the Sun year-round.Hands down, people describe Phoenix style as casual, modern, and trendy, though generally one or two seasons behind.  One person even described it as “smart,” referring to the use of basics that are jazzed up with choice accessories and jackets or footwear with more of an edge.

“Definitely the weather [is a major influence on what people wear in Phoenix and] the fact that everyone is so laid back,” says Somlynn Rorie, managing editor of phoenixpicks.com and the behind-the-scenes blogger for TheUglyEarring.com.  “Plus, being in close proximity to LA and San Diego, we have a tendency to take style guidance from that scene vs. NYC or San Francisco, which equates to a lot of color, accessories, labels, and the list goes on and on.”

Phoenix image consultant Alison Craig expounds on color choices: “The natural environment plays a role in the colors people choose. There tends to be to three main color groups: the browns that blend in with the mountains and sand; the colorful – fun bright bold colors; and, of course, classic black.”

As such, creative layering is the modus operandi during the fall and winter.  “The natives are thin blooded. When it hits below 72 we seize the opportunity to rock fall/winter fashion,” says Rorie.

“Cute jackets are worn in the morning, taken off in the afternoon, then put back on again for the night out,” explains Nicole Dmitry, a PR account executive with the Phoenix PR boutique firm Knoodle.

“Scottsdale is a well-known destination point and has several fashion shows and upscale boutiques, which has a lot of influence,” notes Dimitri. “The downtown area and the Art District are very creative, diverse, and have a lot of culture. It contributes greatly to the vintage clothing trend, as there are a variety of unique vintage and thrift stores around that location.”

Weather in Phoenix

Highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s are the norm in this desert town during the winter months – and it’s just how the natives like it!  It is also very dry, so make sure you drink plenty of water and moisturize well.  The sun shines often during the winter so definitely bring those sunglasses you’d abandoned since summer.  Precipitation does not start to pick up until March as the warmer weather in surrounding states brings more humidity to the area.

What to Wear in Phoenix

Having some solid basics like layerable short-sleeve and long-sleeve knit tops and tanks, a lightweight cardigan, a fun jacket in a cool color or texture, leggings, jeans, and a simple knit dress is a good place to start.  Scarves, vests, and funky boots complete most outfits and can help you easily transition between cool mornings, warm afternoons, and even cooler nights.  Think brighter colors anchored by neutrals like camel, gray, and black.

Any type of boot will work well as will open-toed heels, boots, or flats.   Even flip-flops are acceptable this time of year, weather permitting.

This is also the place to show off your favorite statement jewelry, so bring a few favorites like a cool cocktail ring, a big pendant necklace, or bold earrings that will go with everything in your suitcase.  No need to pack a separate jewelry case.  PLUS, you will likely find one-of-a-kind pieces at the number of adorable shops sprinkling the main parts of Phoenix and Scottsdale that you’ll need the space.

At night, most people are out and about in jeans, heels, and a head-turning top that is either embellished, is in a luxe material, or is in a fun silhouette like a one-shoulder blouse or a sequined spaghetti-strapped tank.

“There are those who ‘dress’ for dinner, but even at the nice restaurants you’ll find a somewhat casual vibe (dressy sandals, flowing dresses, etc.),” notes marketing specialist and fashion-conscious Phoenix resident Karen Moehr of Moehr and Associates.

Fortunately, the Little Black Dress is a staple in every Phoenician’s closet.  So bring yours in a seasonless wool crepe or cotton sateen and dress it up or down according to the occasion for those just-in-case moments.

“Business is tailored casual,” says former model and second generation Arizonan Carole Bartholomeux.  “Most of the year, businesswomen do not wear hosiery.  However, we love days in the fall when it is cold enough (in the 60’s) to wear boots or tights!”  Do stick to what you know, though, with what you are comfortable with, and for what your particular circumstances are (i.e. most job interviews definitely call for a conservative suit!).

Given the party-like atmosphere and high population of vistors in the area, it’s a great opportunity to break out your funnest.

“Consider you’re going to a city where there is constant visual and sensory stimulation,” says image consultant and personal stylist Monica Barnett. “For your attire to stand out (without going over the top or nude), you need clothing that highlights your assets and adds a little flavor.”

Spring / Summer in Las Vegas

It is hot, hot, hot, especially during July and August, so it’s always a good idea to wear bright colors and super light fabrics like linen, light rayon, light jersey knits and sheer wovens. Sandals work great, of course, but be sure to use sunscreen to avoid burned feet!

At night temps can drop 20 – 25 degrees, so bring a light cardigan, wrap or jacket to cover up.  If you decide to go out, try a hot sequined short-sleeved jacket or a funky cotton blazer with the sleeves rolled up.

The casinos can be chilly with all that cool air pumped through to offset the heat outside.  If you plan to make your fortune at the craps table or the slot machines all day, keep it casual and simple, but always remember to bring a cardigan or light jacket to ward off chilly A/C breezes.

Fall / Winter in Las Vegas

If you want to avoid the fanny pack / sunglasses / Bermuda shorts look (which is why you’re reading this, right?!), dress in stylish layers during the winter, suggests Emily Strong whose husband Dan will be taking to The Strip as an official StripWalker come New Year’s Day.  She suggests thinking comfort before anything else but to stylishly do so.  Fortunately, this is one vacation where you can express your most personal style with ease.

Did you know that you can also tour the Grand Canyon from Vegas? We didn’t either! Might as well enjoy one of America’s natural wonders while your livin’ it up in Sin City!

The Strip not only offers a ton of cool visuals from the Bellagio Hotel’s dancing fountains to the characters selling wares here and there but also a fun opportunity to people watch and to shop.  For a casual walk during the day or while shopping at Fashion Show Mall, for example, leggings, a long vest, and tee or tunic can take you from day to night.

It sounds counterintuitive, but don’t leave your scarf at home – use it to artfully drape over a long-sleeve tee with either a sash or belt over rolled-up jeans or shorts.  Summer seems to linger some days around this time of year, so sundresses of any type, color, and material still work.  You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you are comfortable – stylish flats, flip-flops, gladiator sandals, or low-heeled or flat boots are it.  Another place where cowboy boots are a go year-round!

Vegas nights may be cool, but the MO is to look hot.  If you’re hitting up a show, a nice casual dress or jeans and a glitzy top all the way to a fabulous sequined tank dress with a shawl will all look appropriate. Clubs exude more of the dress-to-impress vibe, so wear fabulous heels, jeans, and a sexy top or wear that body-skimming dress you were always too nervous to wear back home.  Barnett suggests bringing a light special occasion jacket or a wrap at night.  It’s a special occasion, and you should be dressed for it!

A hedonistic oasis in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Vegas experiences that typical desert weather: Dry, hot days and very cool nights, with July and August’s being the hottest.  And since humidity is super low (less than 10%), your hair will thank you!

This time of year is ideal in the Valley, though night temperatures drop significantly.

It mostly rains in the winter though average annual rainfall is only 4.2 inches.  Snow in the mountains around Vegas is not uncommon and, though rare, can occur in the actual Valley!

Temperatures start to pick up though the difference in degrees from day to night is starker on the skin.

Fashion Show Mall | Self-proclaimed as “Las Vegas’ premier retail destination,” this shopping venue is full of your favorites: Saks, Neiman’s, Zara, bebe, and Nevada’s ONLY Nordstrom, along with over 250 other shops and restaurants.  The open deck feel is a welcome respite from a long walk on the strip.  Check out their live fashion runway shows every hour from noon – 6 pm every Friday to Sunday. 3200 Las Vegas Blvd, across from Wynn Las Vegas.

The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Hotel and Casino | Over 160 boutiques, shops, and restaurants including Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Gucci, and Fendi.  You’ll feel like your walking through an ancient Roman marketplace in this cool setup.  Check out the daily Roman gods and goddesses show where actors portray deities like Venus, Apollo, and Neptune in a fantastic display of light, sound, and special effects.

LA is the queen of trendy, so it’s easy to look good but be comfortable.

•    Layers are essential here. Having at least three pieces (scarf / tank / jeans, mini / leggings / oversized top) looks put together but keeps you comfortable.

•    Dresses, tunics and rompers. To keep it simple but chic, try one-piece dressing. A funky pair of open-toe booties, flat sandals or cowboy boots will add that extra funkiness in a snap.

•    Have a wear-with-everything sweater or jacket. Day temps can plunge 15 or even 20 degrees at night, so be prepared.   If you only bring one, bring along a tailored, casual jacket (like twill) or a thick-knit cardigan with a vintage twist that you can wear to Dodger stadium as well as to a dinner.  Make it bright and happy in a sunny yellow, orange or kelly green.

•    Jeans are a staple. Though skinny jeans are a Hollywood favorite, having any well-fitting pair to throw on that will take you from a day of shopping to dinner is perfect.

•    K.I.S.S…then accessorize. It’s California casual but take a cue from the style goddesses of Hollywood and kick it up a notch.  Adding a great, cuffed bracelet and earrings, a good scarf, or some punchy leggings will add that extra “flair” that takes your outfit from casual to LA casual.

•    Don’t forget your kicks. Most anything goes.  Our last trip this summer showed that the weather doesn’t keep anyone from wearing what they want on their feet in order to make their outfit work.  We saw everything from thong sandals to knee-high (yes, knee-high) boots.  Nothing gets put away in an LA closet (how lucky!).

If you happen to make your way to Long Beach or Santa Monica, channel your beachy side and feel free to dress down more.  It’s not unusual to see the locals donning their two-pieces under a breezy cover-up and denim mini.   Flip-flops are a basic here in the summer and light flats give you another comfy alternative.

Travel east about 20 or 30 miles, and you hit the desert.  Make sure you wear light breathable natural fabrics, moisturize and drink plenty of water!  Temps in the desert can drop quickly at night, so bring an extra long-sleeve sweater or light jacket.

Los Angeles experiences May Grey, and June Gloom during the spring.  April starts off the spring season perfectly with a change of 3 average inches of rain to almost zero.  May Grey and June Gloom produce cloudy or foggy mornings on the coast which dissipate by the middle of the day for you to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.  Think leggings, long-sleeve cardi or jacket, jeans, booties, medium to light scarf, peep-toe flats or heels or open-toe booties.

A true escape from the humidity and high heat of most other parts of the country, LA experiences the weather of summer dreams: warm and dry.  As you move from the coast every mile, the temperature increases just about one degree, so beware of desert heat as you move inland!  Think bermuda shorts, rompers, short-sleeve sweater, light knit vest, 3/4 sleeve swing jacket, sandals, open-toe booties.

The weather continues to be perfectly warm and mild but the nights are much cooler.  If you’re by the beach, the already cold Pacific waters will require a cardigan or hoodie to stay warm.  November brings a little bit more rain as average rainfall goes from zero to one inch.  Think jeans, leggings, booties, light knit, light jacket, medium scarf.

Weather is a little crazier in LA this time of year!  Temperature ranges on some days can swing 30 degrees F while sprinklings of rain happen throughout for an average of 3 inches monthly.  Think jeans, leggings, long tunic sweater, light leather bomber jacket, medium-weight vest, boots or booties.
