Washington DC style is conservatively trendy.

I grew up in Washington and the style of natives is quintessential North East trad/prep chic.  Hardly any girlfriends of mine even knew how to put make-up on senior year of high school. The style was very much an easy breezy natural Americana.  DC’s general culture is heavily influenced by the professional character of the city, many people’s being employed in staid jobs as attorneys, federal office workers, and other supporting industries which call for an austerity to workplace fashion. What to wear in Philadelphia in the fall

Philadelphia is a hotbed for American history, but it’s also a fashionable place to visit.  If you get the chance to visit this fall, you only have to remember two things: be yourself but do it fashionably.  According to fashion writer and current Philadelphia Style Examiner Kate Concannon, “We love clothes, we love fashion, more than anything we love to express ourselves through fashion, but it isn’t over the top and it isn’t unobtainable fashion, meaning labels aren’t everything to us.  Yes, every girl dies for a designer something-something here and there, but you won’t get dirty looks if you aren’t rocking Chanel through Rittenhouse Square.” Read the rest of this entry »

What to wear in Boston in the Fall

Gisele in Boston

Boston is one of the smallest big towns in America.  That’s how one Travelista I talked to described the city after having moved there from Texas a few years ago.  “With schools like Harvard, Tufts, Boston College, and Boston U [among 50 other schools] within miles of each other, the city definitely has that casual college vibe,” says Jen, a transplant from Texas who’s enjoyed the charm that the city offers. “Plus, you walk, cab it or take the T everywhere, so it’s important to be comfortable.” Read the rest of this entry »

New York City is a mecca for ambitious business professionals, impassioned creatives, families, immigrants, and anyone inspired to live life at a pulsing rate. It’s like society on steroids: you live your whole life in public, maybe because your apartment’s a shoebox, or maybe because you actually like being around other people. Forget the stereotype: New Yorkers may be practical and straightforward, but they love being around one another, no matter how much they smirk. It’s an invigorating city to visit, whether you’re into the arts, food, fashion, architecture, history, media, parks and rec, business and industry, or just learning more about new cultures. People who live in New York are from all kinds of backgrounds, ethnically and geographically, and the style reflects that. Anything goes, and you should too. Read the rest of this entry »

New York City is the capital of American fashion and is an international trendsetter, both practically speaking and in terms of its everyday residents. From the Jazz Age and Harlem Renaissance, to beatniks and hippies, to Studio 54 to power suits and the Wall Street boom, New York is a tipping point for starting fashion trends around the world. And while a lot of trends permeate well past Brooklyn, when you travel to the city, you’ll quickly realize that what you thought was “cool” back home is nothing compared to the edgy experimentation that New Yorkers love day in and day out. What to Wear in Washington DC

by Renae Virata

In a land where people are moving in and out of the city as much as they are up and down the ladder, it can be just as hard to pin down exactly what defines the style culture in DC.  Many locals used to lament profusely about the lack of style there that other major and international cities enjoyed around them.  But many have been doing something about it.  From the influences trickling down from The Hill to the rise of fashion institutions like DC Fashion Week, the style landscape of our nation’s capital is putting DC on the fashion map.
