The calendar hasn’t switched us to fall yet, but Labor Day signals the official transition from summer to autumn, and what better way to celebrate than a bonfire? Say goodbye to the beach while welcoming crisp evening air and a cozy fire: it’s a favorite coastal tradition no matter which body of water is your neighbor (although, admittedly, Gulf Coasters probably experience more balminess than chill). Pick your favorite bathing suit that you’re most sorry to pack away until spring, but make sure it’s something you’re going to be comfy in and can move around in all day and into the night. A versatile pair of cutoff shorts or chino shorts, plus a chunky cardigan will keep you covered and warm when the sun sets and you’re ready to grab the skewers.

Let’s face it: Summer in the states is hot. You can’t escape it, and you definitely shouldn’t ignore it. Dressing appropriately will make your outing infinitely more enjoyable. Here are the tips you need to look your best whether you are at the pool, a barbeque or swanky soiree during the heat of Independence Day celebrations.

The Pool

If you are attending a pool party, it is imperative that you dress the part. Just in case you decide to take a dip, wear a swimsuit underneath your clothes, but keep the skimpy string bikinis at home as Fourth of July celebrations are typically family events. Try a patterned or tribal tunic with beaded accents for an easy cover up. If you don’t plan on taking a dip, throw on a pair of cropped shorts or pants. Sandals or wedges are a perfect match without sacrificing your footing on grass or slippery areas. Don’t overdress with your footwear. You do not want to look like the poolside waitress.

The Barbeque

Much like pool parties, barbeques are typically held outside. For a daytime dining experience, wear light fabrics to beat the heat. Think linen and light cotton knits or rayons. A tunic at this event is a great transitional piece. If you’ve got multiple parties to attend, it’s definitely your best bet. Lean towards towards bright patterned or solid colors (try turquoise or coral, which look great on everyone) to avoid a “Barbeque Stain on Your White T-shirt.”

The Fancier Soiree

More casual than your typical “soiree,” Fourth of July night outings do not require the typical glitz and glamour. A linen top with embellished jeans and pumps is perfect. Accent any white garment with coral or turquoise to keep with the patriotic theme – in a summery way. The right sundress can take you from pool to rooftop night party with a simple switch of shoes. Opt for a cool and light cotton woven or knit or something with a pattern or more solid color to disguise wrinkles and stains from the day. Be sure to bring a light sweater or shawl for cooler, night temps.

Sexy and sultry

Rekindle your romance or turn other people’s heads with an eye-catching strapless mini-dress. Wear it in a bright color or funky pattern like animal print for a little more grrrr… Show off those gams in a fabulous pair of heels or be little more funky in frilly ankle boots.

Baby, it’s cold outside

Unfortunately, the groundhog DID see his (or her?) shadow this year, so if you aren’t lucky enough to live in a place where warm-weather rules, you still have a number of options to look great and stay warm on V-day. Wear a slimming, long-sleeve dress and match it up with hot patterned stockings (think vampy fishnets or another cut-out look) and hot heels or boots. Wear a turtleneck with a cocktail skirt or wear a sexy one-shoulder over a sheer long-sleeve tee.

Alternative looks

For a more casual look, try skinny jeans with a hot draped top and a fitted tuxedo jacket with the sleeves rolled up. Pair them with your ankle boots or favorite heels. Don’t forget to do up your heels

Check out Sari Motley, makeup artist and owner of her own cosmetics line of the same name, for a “romantic face” to complement your Valentine’s Day look!

Mardi Gras this year falls on Tuesday, February 16, which means you’ve got to fast forward through your Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day outfits and start planning for one of the biggest party days of the season.

Below we’ll give tips for two types of Mardi Gras outfits: one for parades (we’re focusing on New Orleans, Mobile and other U.S. parades) and one that works for house parties. If you’ve been to Carnival celebrations in Europe or South America, please leave your tips on what to wear to those parades in the comments section below!

What to wear to a Mardi Gras parade

New Orleans is a fashionable but casual town that normally eschews high heels and tight clothing for boots, sandals, jeweled flats and super-soft tees. Women in NOLA love accessorizing, but if you’re going to a parade, you won’t have to worry about bringing your own jewelry to the party — you’ll be showered in enough beads, novelty items, flowers, and plastic rings to make you look like a queen.

The important thing to remember when dressing for a Mardi Gras parade is comfort and practicality. Here are our best tips:

Wear flat, closed-toe shoes. People are going to be stomping and jumping all over your poor feet, so wear your Converse, TOMS or flat boots to protect yourself. You’re also going to be standing and walking around for hours — and we do mean hours — so wear socks or liners to prevent blisters. Pack band-aids just in case.

Don’t wear short skirts. You’re just asking to get groped, especially if you slip or reach too high for beads. Layer leggings underneath short shorts and skirts to be safe and comfy.

Wear washable items. It’s a safe bet that whatever you wear on Mardi Gras is going to get dirty. At some point during the day or night, at least one of the following is going to spill on you: beer, mud, frosting, jello shots, daiquiris, and funnel cake or beignets. It’s okay to wear a fitted t-shirt and your Saturday morning jeans — you’re going to be covered in brightly colored beads anyway!

Bring a windbreaker with pockets. It often rains or at least drizzles in New Orleans, and if you want extra protection from sloshing beer, stuff a windbreaker into your bag.

Choose a crossbody, zip-top bag. For security’s sake and to keep your hands free, wear a crossbody zip-top bag that has room for all your stuff, but make sure you leave valuables locked up at home.

Bring plastic sunglasses. Opt for cheap plastic sunglasses to protect your face from flying beads rather than a baseball cap, which can limit your vision in a bad way.

Don’t be afraid to get a little crazy. Mardi Gras brings out everyone’s kooky side, so if you’ve been dying to wear those turquoise knee socks, paint your face and wear glittery fake eyelashes, this is the day to mix and match your crazy accessories. Just make sure everything you put on is comfortable enough to leave on all day.

What to wear to a Mardi Gras party:

Because we’re not all lucky enough to live in a place where Mardi Gras is an official state holiday, or where you can even find a Mardi Gras parade, you might have to settle for a house party. Here’s how to get into the spirit:

Go for gold, green and purple: It’s tacky, but it’s also the tricolor tradition for Mardi Gras. You can always wear green or purple and accessorize with gold jewelry or metallic shoes.

Embrace impractical accessories: Since you’re going to be inside, or at least near chairs, you can wear your high-heeled boots or ridiculous hat, and then take them off whenever you get uncomfortable.

Consider the invitation: Some Mardi Gras parties are actually black-tie, or at least cocktail attire. Make sure you know the dress code before you go.

Act like it’s New Year’s: For dressier parties, apply the New Year’s rule: start with a cocktail or black-tie basic (like an LBD) and then add blingy accessories and fun shoes to make it fun.

If you’re still on the Internet four days before Christmas and still have shopping left to do, we’d normally tell you to get off your booty and get to the mall. Or at least get back to your online shopping. But in this case, we’ll let you procrastinate a little while longer so that we can help make your marathon Christmas shopping trip a little less upsetting.

Because the last thing you need to worry about as you elbow your way through the madness is a wedgie, blisters from your boots, or a coat that’s too bulky for your shopping bags, consider our tips for dressing comfortably, without going the Juicy track suit route.

Wear comfy shoes: We’ve been in love with Minnetonkas for quite a while and have gone Christmas shopping in these babies two years in a row. They’re soft and warm, and the flat rubber soles let us weave around strollers and grandmas with ease. TOMS and Yosi Samra flats work too, but save your stacked boots for holiday parties.

Get Flingwear: Also on our gift list for travelers, Flingwear’s thongs are tag-free and have an actual waistband. You can shop all day, fight for that last Dora doll, and sit in traffic without thinking once about your undies.

Leave the bulky coat at home: When your shopping bags slide off of your overcoat’s shoulders for the 10th time, you’re going to injure someone, or yourself. Accept it, and be more strategic with your layering. Wear a cashmere tee under a leather jacket or blazer, or just bring an infinity scarf for extra warmth over your sweater.

Wear pants that fit: As your bags rub against your waistband, your pants are going to ride down if they’re even the slightest bit too big. Put on a belt and wear the jeans that fit your perfectly, from top to bottom.

Carry a purse with pockets: You’ll probably want a big bag for your water bottle, snacks, and phone, but bring a bag that has pockets. Digging through to find your list, wallet and gift cards at the register will cause you more stress.

To kick off your fashionable holiday season, you’ve just got to start impressing your family and friends with a knockout Thanksgiving outfit. Here we’ll highlight a few different scenarios and share looks you can shop by clicking on each image.

When you’re the hostess: A classic shift with a pattern, color scheme or embellishment that matches your personal style is best if you want to remain comfortable as you dash about the kitchen and serve your guests. Unless you’re going to be spending a significant amount of time outside, you can probably get away with something sleeveless, in a pretty jewel tone. If you love neutrals, opt for a dress or skirt with a sateen or brushed twill finish to dress it up. Tall boots with a chunky heel will keep you from slipping over spilled turkey and cranberry sauce.

At your significant others’ house: Even if you’re super tight with your boyfriend or significant others’ family, you’ll want to keep things classy and low maintenance. Try a boyfriend cardigan over a pencil skirt with boots and patterned tights, or dark blue wide-leg jeans (no frays or rips) with a silky blouse and sharp blazer.

For the football party: If you’re heading to the Thanksgiving dinner that ends with football (either on TV or an actual game in the backyard), you’ll have to be more creative with your layering. Wear nice jeans that allow for extra movement and wear a graphic tee underneath your dressier sweater (check out our previous post on strategic layering here).

Avoid tops and pants that are too tight or clingy — even if you have a fabulous figure, you’ll probably be a little bloated after your big meal!

Hey, Travelistas! Wanna know what to wear for the weather? Just click on My Stylist and type in your location, date, and an occasion and let My Stylist do the rest. Join us on Facebook and Twitter for everything fashion and travel from WeareverTheWeather.com!

by Renae Virata

Office parties — especially ones that involve costumes — can be a nightmare…or an opportunity to show off your creativity in a way you’re normally not allowed to do at work. If you’re encouraged to dress up for Halloween or attend a Halloween-themed office party, you don’t have to suffer a complete meltdown trying to think of a good costume that will get you attention, but not the kind that’ll get you fired. Audrey, a CPA in Houston who also writes about fashion for her blog Chic Girl Style, has tips for figuring out how to make your Halloween costumes office appropriate.

Tone down your real costume: Audrey says that she uses an office-appropriate version of the costume she’s planned for parties with friends. “One year,” she explains, “I was Bonnie, as in Bonnie and Clyde. My hair was already a blonde bob that year so I sported a cream beret, a Bonnie type sweater, switched my short skirt and fishnets I wore to the non-office Halloween party for a longer skirt, no fishnets and work heels.”

Make an effort: If you don’t already have a costume planned, show your boss that you’re a good sport and don a pair of cat ears and an all-black outfit, like Audrey did one year. You don’t have to wear yoga pants and mittens like you did as a kid, but could wear a fitted black pencil skirt and black blouse or cardigan, with boots or pumps, depending on the weather. If you’re not a fan of cats, “you could do something similar and simply wear a witch hat,” Audrey suggests.

Get a feel for the office vibe: Ask your office mates what they’re planning to wear on Halloween to avoid a Lindsay Lohan Mean Girls moment. If no one’s really dressing up, just bring a fun accessory like cat ears or a cowgirl bandana. “If short skirts are a no-no at your office,” Audrey says, “then turn your party-appropriate sexy fireman/french maid/kitten/witch/whatever costume into a toned down version!”

Hey, Travelistas! Wanna know what to wear for the weather? Just click on My Stylist and type in your location, date, and an occasion and let My Stylist do the rest. Join us on Facebook and Twitter for everything fashion and travel from WeareverTheWeather.com!

Being creative and having fun should be the benchmarks for a more memorable and fun Halloween. In fact, one WTW reader won a costume contest with over 100 participants in a more cute-than-sexy marionette costume complete with strings and giant wooden controller – on her head But what really swayed the judges was her creativity and winning attitude.

Whether you are going solo, getting together with a group of your friends, or pairing up with your significant other, here are some costume inspirations that will get you excited about Halloween all over again.

On Your Own

Carrie...So Scary!

• Revisit your childhood and dress up like your favorite girl power characters – remember Jem, Smurfette, Punky Brewster, and Judy Jetson?

• How scary was the movie Carrie? With a little fake blood; red paint; a pink prom dress; a fake, bloody corsage; and a long wig, you can recreate the prom night scene (and not have to do your hair!).

• Go traditional and do a real witch, vampire, or bride of Frankenstein costume.

Group Costumes

• Represent your favorite TV show casts. Gossip Girl (you’ve already been shopping the styles on the show…why not put them to work?) or Sex and the City.

• Do something that stands out and is totally silly – like the Fantana girls.

• Mystery, Inc. Team. You know them as Shaggy, Velma, Fred, Daphne, and Scooby.

•Gilligan’s Island. Ginger, Mary Anne, The Professor, The Howells, The Skipper, and Gilligan. Easy to make, easy to pull off.

• Wizard of Oz. Skip into the party as Dorothy, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, The Tin (Wo)Man…and Toto.

Couple Costumes

Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett

• Ones we never think of: Lucy and Ricky, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing (think the last scene – “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”), Michael Jackson and his girlfriend in the “Thriller” video…get creative!

• The ones you see all the time: Bonnie and Clyde (those broad-shouldered jackets are so in, after all), Popeye and Olive Oyl, any Disney couple.

• Get really artsy (and super-Halloween), like last year’s movie characters Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett.

If the weather gets nippy, bring a coordinating jacket, cape, or wrap and make it a part of your costume. Make sure you check out the conditions of your outing. If you are going to be outside and the weather will be warm, forego the vinyl catsuit so you don’t feel as catty as you look.

No matter what city you live in, Labor Day is the official end of summer and one of the best times to get creative with your outfit. Unlike the Fourth of July, this all-American holiday is more about saying goodbye to summer and embracing everything fall rather than dressing in red, white and blue. You probably want your outfit to pay a tribute to the way you spent your summer (hopefully not working the whole time) while carefully experimenting with your new fall purchases. Keep reading for tips on how to dress for Labor Day, no matter what kind of celebration you’re heading to:

• Bar-b-que: It’s an American tradition, so you’ll want to show your team spirit so to speak, but don’t feel pressured to dress like a tablecloth. Give your jean shorts another run and try out a retro-inspired halter or oversized blouse for your stylish statement. Comfy hoodies, colorful sneakers and jeweled flats round out the relaxed vibe.

Click here to check out a great Bar-b-que outfit!

• Pool party: If you’re going to a Labor Day pool party, you have two choices: the bathing suit that you can play in and the bathing suit you can strut around in. For swimming and pool games, any cute suit will do, but bring bright jellies and a sundress as a cover up to make it extra festive. If it’s a fancier party, wear a bikini or one-piece with extra embellishments and padding for added sophistication. Try mixing and matching pieces with My Stylist to inject your own personal flavor into your swim look.

• Beach: Give your huaraches and gladiators a final spin at a Labor Day beach party. Summer scarves and cotton wraps are perfect as cover-ups and impromptu blankets when the sun sets for fall.

Click here to check out a great Beach outfit!

• Cocktail party: This is where you can have the most fun. Pair a favorite summer item, like a sleek little romper or mini dress with fall’s best layering pieces: a boyfriend blazer, a long, drapey cardigan, or a cropped leather jacket if it’s cool enough.

Click here to check out a great “Cocktail” outfit!

One more tip to consider when you get dressed: Pick out colors and jewelry that show off your summer tan: it’s going to be a while before you get it back!

All of the outfits in the link above were created using the My Stylist feature of WeareverTheWeather.com. Input your location, date, and occasion to create your own fabulous outfits and share them with friends through email, Facebook, Twitter and more!
