Let’s face it: It is just too darn hot to wear jeans in August!  When it comes to casual summer pants, you don’t have to stick to just jeans and capris.  Here are some fun ideas.  Bonus: They transition great into the fall!

- Think color. You’d be surprised at the number of fun “neutrals” that are out there that would work with almost anything in your closet. Ever thought of owning a pair of yellow, mauve, or blue pants?  Now’s the time to try!

- Fabric is key! Linen blends are great and less wrinkly, for example, and carry color well.  Light jerseys in more structured shapes give you the ease of the fabric with a more polished shape.

- Different silhouettes can keep your wardrobe fresh.  Think gauchos, think harems, think pencil.

Oftentimes, when an occasion calls for “casual,” we might immediately reach for our favorite pair of jeans.  While they are a sure bet for style and comfort and with variety defining today’s trends from top to bottom, options abound that can make your new casual pant of choice a little more interesting.

•   Leggings. They’ve been around for a while and have transcended trend status to basics status. How often do you truly reach for them?

•   Stretchy trousers. Done in a number of muted but more interesting colors like mustard, royal purple, and even heathered grays, they can lend that extra panache to your outfit that allows you to keep everything else simple.  Look for fabrications that won’t fade and that feel good, like soft cords, velveteen, and even thick jerseys.

•   The non-pant pant. Okay…kind of a stretch, but why not layer your favorite pair of fall-esque walking shorts over a fun pair of tights?  The look is so on-trend but just comfortable enough for fall.

•   Lounge-like pants. In an upgraded, more tailored silhouette, a great pair of stretchy, lounge-in-‘em-all-day fleece or wool pant look more dressed up with a great jewelry story or layering pieces with more depth and interest like an oversized textured dolman-sleeve sweater or a luxe tee with a fabulous fur vest.

•   Dress down those dressier pants. Why not play with shapes, colors, and fabrics while you’re at it?  Tapered and cropped, high-waisted and with a drop-crotch, in a fun fabrication or texture, pants that you would normally wear to a less casual event can be played down with just the right combination of accessories and tops.  Add a tank and a simple chain in warmer weather.  A slim and solid-colored, neutral turtleneck is always a surefire way to dress down a bottom.
