It’s that time of year again – spring cleaning! The sooner you get started making room for your new spring wardrobe, the less moments of “A closet full of clothes and nothing to wear” syndrome. The list of tips below is straightforward and gives you a comprehensive checklist of to-do’s, so get started before the lazy days of summer set in!
- Pick an area to start (drawers, closet, under the bed, etc.).
- Go through everything and make piles (keep, store, give, sell, toss).
- If you haven’t worn something in over a year or it doesn’t fit anymore, part with it.
- If it looks worn, torn, or stained, toss it.
- If it’s in decent shape but not in style or old, give it away.
- If it’s in good condition but not for you anymore (fit, etc.), sell it.
- If it’s in good condition but not in season and a good piece, store it.
The Salvation Army will even pick up your bags for you, to schedule a pick up call them at 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825) to discuss a free pick up of your clothing, furniture or household items or to find out the nearest drop-off location bin. Many consignment/thrift stores offer a pick up service as well, more offer a drop-off service so you don’t have to wait while someone sorts through everything. They will usually offer you more in store credit and less in cash, so the choice is yours.
If you have designer items and want to get more money, there is a company in Chicago called eDrop-off that will sell your items for you, http://www.shopedropoff.com. Look in your city for a consignment shop that will split the sales on your designer items. Most will be 50/50 while some may provide a 60/40 split of profit.
