With the impending wedding of Prince William to his princess-to-be Kate Middleton on April 29, I can’t help but add my two cents to what seems to be about a million dollars worth of commentary on her chic fashion sense. I could talk about her blue Issa dress, her collection of hats, and her fun club style, but there’s so much more to what her fabulous wardrobe means to a generation of women than meets the eye. So, as one of those women, I am happy to see that Kate Middleton is the new style icon for the simultaneously poised, sexy and independent chick in her mid-20s to 30s that we’ve been missing for the past decade.
The darling of the world media, nay the world, Ms. Middleton is a godsend to us young women who want a fashion inspiration that mirrors our independent, willful and (still!) fun sensibilities. She is a balance of propriety and a hip gal in her twenties that can be seen in what she wears – the perfect modern-day princess.
But I’m not writing a women’s studies paper, so let’s get down to the fashion bottom of it all, shall we? To get Kate’s look, start with simple pieces with clean lines. They are classics that you never let go of, are of good quality and that barely touch upon the trendy. British prep is the Rugby line from Ralph Lauren, for example. Sophisticated looks can also be found from British outfits Isabella Oliver and Boden, which are available in the US and through WeareverTheWeather.com.
Then funk it up with some choice accessories: an unexpected flash of color, a mini instead of a knee-length pencil skirt, unexpected combinations of prints (polka dots and florals, for example), and cool layers (a scarf and statement necklace or socks with heeled oxfords).
You can bet we’ll be watching Wills and Kate tie the knot and following her as one of our new favorite style icons thereafter. We know you want an outlet for your thoughts on this occasion and her style, so if you’re in the same boat, send us your comments pre and post-wedding!
