My fabulous hair stylist Nubia was just recounting to me the story of one of her clients who’d recently traveled to Europe with her family. She was a mom who was not into having to do laundry during the trip nor soiling their best clothes as they traipsed through tours and excursions. So what did she do? Made them bring the oldest clothes they owned! That way they could just throw them away after they’d worn them.
Well, fast forward to after the trip when the family excitedly developed their vacation pics to add to their brag books. What did they find? A group of sadly dressed tourists in front of some of the most amazing places in the world. Friends would ask to see them, and they would reluctantly refuse. The kids were upset that their mom’s decision to pack light and pack ugly was at the expense of some potentially great photos.
Why bring up this sordid story of vacation fashion gone wrong? Because we’ve all been there – seen pics from a trip in our least desirable clothes, thinking, “I just want to be comfortable – it doesn’t matter what I wear.” And also to drive home the point of this site and what I love: That every moment is worth appropriately dressing for.
A trip is a significant event in your life. It should be treated as specially as you would treat a wedding or a birthday party. It is a celebration of how far in life you have come, of what you do every day to earn a few days of rest and relaxation. So I emphatically encourage anyone to make sure she dresses for the occasion and put some effort into her trip wardrobe. It will help you focus on truly enjoying your time, enhance your experience and make those pictures worth sharing.
I’m looking forward to reading more of your articles in the future. Go for it.

Great article! I know several folks, including myself, who have avoided being in pictures because of what they were wearing. Good rule of thumb, at least for trips — always dress as if someone will be taking your picture!
Thanks, Martin! We often forget that trips are immortalized in pictures – including our outfits!
Love that advice – that goes for guys, too!
