Winter to spring: Taupe tights

by Renae Virata

You might see the stores in the next few weeks already talking about “spring” even though you’re still feeling and seeing winter outside!  Spring in the fashion world, though, is already here come February.  A little confusing, right?  I’ve always found that the easiest way to transition between seasons is to find two or three key items that have just the right color, fabrication, and/or silhouette.  Let’s start with taupe tights!

Taupe is the perfect transitional color – it’s both perfectly warm and cool in tone and neither dark nor light. So it will make something dark and wintery lighter and something light and springy more in tune with colder, darker weather.  And let’s face it, it’s probably going to be freezing still for most of us through at least March, so tights or even leggings in this color will still keep you warm while looking more ‘spring.’

What to wear with your taupe tights?  Everything! Here’s our short list of what will work:

  • Floral prints – Tough but pretty with a medium-weight scarf and a moto or leather jacket, floral prints are balanced from winter to spring with a touch of taupe.
  • All black – Black is warmed up with taupe tights.
  • Muted colors – Taupe is muted, so muted colors like mustard, burnt orange and smoky blue look clean.
  • Taupe shoes – In order to elongate the leg, a pair of taupe ankle boots or heels looks great.  And here’s your excuse to start your spring shoe shopping: Look for lace-up heeled taupe above-the-ankle boots for a sweet spring look.

As a side, I found a fabulous taupe nail color from OPI that ties together your new taupe look – “Los Angeles Latte” (love it!).
