What to wear in New Orleans in the winter

I can’t believe I never thought to spend my holiday, ever, in the Crescent City.  No other place knows how to celebrate pretty much any occasion better than a NOLA native.  Though I avoided the actual NYE celebration, I defintely had a blast in the days leading up to it – especially with the great winter outfits I spotted on the streets! :-)

The weather was such that layers works best if you get an early start and plan to keep going through the night.  A knit tee, light sweater (not wool or acrylic – too warm) and a skirt with tights and boots is a good example.  A light cord jacket is a great topper or a trenchy jacket.  A medium scarf is your best bet versus a turtleneck to keep warm around the neck – when you don’t need it, you can casually tie it to your bag (plus one more accessory to add dimension to your outfit).

The mode for the stylish tourist and local alike is definitely boho chic.  From romantic to urban, it was hard to find someone who didnt’ exhibit some element of funky and easy.  I spotted two such visitors who had different takes on the boho look.  Susanna sported the chic knit cap that was prevalent around the Quarter.  The minute the weather broke 60 degrees, it seemed time to whip out the cozy head covers.  A punch of color helped brighten her outfit.  And, of course, traipsing through the French Quarter would not be comfortable or cute without a pair of reliable and beautiful flat boots.

Speaking of boots, I was surprised to see the boot du jour in and around Bourbon Street – the very Steve Madden boots that I shared on our under $300 gift guide!  Unfortunately, my camera died before I could capture just how many I’d spotted (I mean, four, literally in one day).  Nonetheless, I could see the versatility in them with the different outfits they complemented.  My friend Evelyn swears by hers (I can’t tell you how many outfits she’s worn them with). Definitely a wardrobe staple.

"Kristen" - Boho chic

Kristen, a model, looked romantically boho (and warm!) in an all-gray outfit.  Layers and a mix of textures kept her outfit practical and interesting.  The small floral print, too, was a great add – it broke up the grays and brightened her outfit.  Plus, a great way to do fur and floral together.

In general, if you plan to visit NOLA in the remaining winter months (or, say, for Mardi Gras), definitely opt for comfort.  Even at night, anything goes – no heels required!  The whole point is to have fun.  And no one’s talking about your outfit – it’s all for your own enjoyment in this town!

Great post! I’m doing a cross country road trip next week (FL to AZ) and NOLA is one of our stops! 10 hours of driving = comfy clothes, go to know I’ll fit in!

Thanks, Lena! I am so jealous…road trips are a great way to slow down and really absorb your surroundings – and a cross-country one no less! Send pics of your fab outfits when you get a chance!
