Atlanta is considered the New York of the South in most circles, so even if you plan to just do some shopping, hang out with friends, and go on one special dinner date, sophistication is a must. Below are suggestions for a basic wardrobe that anyone can adapt to their own style for a great weekend in ATL.
“For the most part Atlanta is like any other Southern city,” says Atlanta fashion writer Ana Nicole. “People tend to be laid back about their style, and comfort is number one on everyone’s list…with the majority of people being from everywhere but Atlanta, we have a great mix of style influences, from traditional Southern to Brooklyn hipster chic. Whatever you do, make it you.”

Summer weather has given way to true fall weather, so be sure to leave the sandals and flip-flops at home. Layering pieces that can go together to create different looks will not only help you pack more efficiently but also give you a variety of cool-weather looks for most occasions on your trip. Here are our picks for how to get the most mileage out of your Atlanta trip wardrobe this fall. We selected a more neutral palette, but do incorporate color where you can!
- Boots are huge this time of year, so pair them with leggings or jeggings (which Ana says are everywhere in town), a simple tunic sweater, and your favorite medium-weight scarf. Tuck your skinny jeans into them and wear with your blazer and scarf. A wedge or low-heeled style with a slight wedge to the heel will keep you comfortable but chic in the day and take you straight into night.
- LBD. The Little Black Dress will never steer you wrong no matter where you’re going. Keep it simple and show off your individual style with accessories. Your fur vest (below) can be a cute addition to a black dress with a high neck, a funky patterned pair of black hose or tights and heeled boots or pumps for night.
- A versatile blazer can help you look chic in the daytime with boots, your medium-weight scarf and a basic tee. Bunch up the sleeves if the temperature warms up for a little more flair. Wear it to dinner over your dress at night.
- A unique layering sweater. A coccoon top in a fabulous texture will add a little more interest to your outfit layered over a simple long sleeve tee or turtleneck.
- Wedge heels. They’re so now and give comfortable height to your outfit. With a long-sleeve mini-dress and tights for dinner or your jeans, cardigan, skinny belt, and scarf for day, you can get a lot more mileage from just the right pair.
- Bring a basic set of jewelry for the day. You can’t go wrong with an artsy metal cuff bangle, sophisticated drop earrings, and a long pendant necklace. For night, try statement earrings, a cocktail ring and layers of long necklaces.
- Fur vest or capelet. Wear with your skinny jeans tucked into your boots and a slim turtleneck or long-sleeve tee for an easygoing look. At night, you can layer over your LBD for a funky but polished look.
