If you are lucky enough to visit Napa Valley in the fall, you are in for a treat (besides the fabulous wine you will no doubt be sampling).  It’s harvest time in September and October, so the smell of sweet grapes coupled with the waning summer heat make this fall getaway a real feast for the senses.  Inspired by the incredible natural surroundings and faded signs of city life, Napa style is akin to its New England counterparts but with a West Coast twist.

Napa Valley Style Culture

Sophisticated tastes run high in Wine Country as oenophiles from all over flock to the area for some good wine and R&R.  The look is polished but relaxed, a sort of liberal preppy that appreciates anything tailored but at the same time is not confining.  You are pretty close to nature after all!  The growing arts and culture scene has also been a major influence, so artful accessorizing can totally make your outfit pop.

What to Wear

If you plan to visit quite a few different wineries in a day, decide to have a picnic lunch, or even go on a hot air balloon ride, you’ll definitely want to wear clothes that can withstand a whole day of walking, standing, and hanging outdoors. That means chic flats, breathable fabrics like cotton in layerable silhouettes (think tees, simple button downs).  At night, dress up a little more – try a fitted dress and a blazer with the sleeves rolled up; slim trousers and a dressy blouse; or a leather jacket, mini skirt, tights, and fitted tee.  Color is welcome as the sun shines brightly in this area, so don’t be afraid to experiment with pops of yellow, orange, lavender, red or chartreuse.

Weather and Fashion

As you travel around the area, you’ll find that the weather varies depending on where you are, which has a lot to do with the hills and mountains surrounding the valley.  The more north you travel, for example, the warmer it becomes whereas traveling more east, as happens in most of California, becomes more arid.  In general, Napa starts to cool down in September, but summer temps can linger into October, so be sure you check the weather before you go (or use our My Stylist feature to know what to wear for the forecast).  Start off with a light cardigan or jacket and, as the day warms up, stay comfortable in a button down, long-sleeve knit tee or tunic and jeans, a woven skirt, or leggings.
