Airport style

by Renae Virata

You’ve figured out the perfect outfit for every day of every minute of your upcoming trip.  So why leave your style at the gate?  Though there’s definitely nothing wrong with wearing a track suit in order to be comfortable, dressing with more style and thought will help you be prepared for the unexpected (lost luggage, running into people you know, having to unexpectedly go straight to an event after landing, etc.).

No matter how long your trip is, comfort is key.  Having easy layering pieces that can be changed up easily are ideal for short or long trips.  A simple pair of looser jeans that can be cuffed up are versatile with flats, sandals, or boots; a long-sleeved cardigan; and a simple tank or tee.  Make those cargos work with a slimming v-neck tee, a light jacket, and a cute scarf.  Roll up the sleeves on your favorite button-down and top it off with a comfy sweater or jacket.

For business professionals on the go, the key is making sure you wear as many maintenance-free pieces as possible.  Try a wrinkle-free pair of wool pants or a softer skirt so that you don’t have to worry about creases from sitting down for a long time.  Jersey dresses are super comfortable and never lose their shape or wrinkle and can easily be topped off with an artsy jacket or blazer.  Try to avoid white or very light colors.  You never know if you, the person you are sitting next to, or your flight attendant, for that matter, will handle your drink with butter fingers.

It may be tempting to slip on your most stylish stilettos, but imagine running through the airport or having to wait in that long security line in four-inch heels!  Not the best way to start your trip.  If you must wear heels right after you land, at least go easy on your tootsies with a comfortable pair of stylish slip-ons while traveling.

Things to Avoid

•    Uncomfortable shoes – too tight, too high

•    Anything that will eventually cut off your circulation when worn for too long – tight jeans, tight sleeves, tight mid-riff top

•    Delicate materials like crocheted pieces, lacy fabrics

•    Too light or white pieces
